A Sauna Host gathering
Sauna Book Club
Where the book becomes the excuse.
- Group size
- 4-6 people
- Length
- 90 minutes
- Breath pattern
- Box breathing
Every book club has the same problem. Twenty minutes on the book, then wine and catching up, and everyone drives home a little disappointed in a way nobody says out loud.
The book was never really the point. It was the excuse to get six people in a room. The trouble is that a living room doesn't ask anything of anyone, so the conversation stays where it's comfortable.
Move it to the sauna and the conversation moves with it.
Why it works
Heat, then cold, then honesty
Heat is a great leveller for a discussion. Nobody's checking a phone, nobody's refilling anything, and the person who usually talks most is exactly as uncomfortable as everyone else. You get shorter sentences and more honest ones.
The plunge between rounds does the real work. Coming out of cold water people answer differently, less considered and more true. Ask what did you resist agreeing with in that window and you'll get the actual answer instead of the book club answer.
The plan
Your 90-minute flow
This is the whole shape of the evening, start to finish. It's the same structure a trained Revivery lead runs in the studio, sized for a home sauna and 4-6 people.
- 00:00Arrival and container (10 min)
- 00:10Sauna round 1 + box breath + prompts 1-2 (25 min)
- 00:35Plunge + integration (5 min)
- 00:40Sauna round 2 + prompts 3-6 (30 min)
- 01:10Plunge + integration (5 min)
- 01:15Close (15 min)
The conversation
Three of the 10 prompts
The prompts are what turn a sauna session into a gathering. You ask one, everyone answers, nobody responds to anyone else's answer. Here are three of the 10 written for this theme.
- 01What's the line from the book you've been thinking about since you closed it?
- 02What did you resist agreeing with?
- 03Who else in your life needs to read this?
Playlist seed
Max Richter, quiet Sufjan Stevens, rain recordings. Keep it low. The book is the star.
